What: Rally to end undemocratic school closures

When: Monday, November 21, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm

Where: Queen’s Park, 111 Wellesley Street West, Toronto

Join the Ontario Alliance Against School Closures (OAASC) to protest the Ontario government’s revised Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline. The guideline fails to consider the effects of school closures and amalgamations on rural communities, the OAASC says.

“Rural school closures means long bus rides. Students will leave home before sunrise and return after sunset,” says OPSEU Executive Board Member Felicia Fahey, an OAASC member.  “They will not be able to participate in extracurricular activities or hold a part-time job in their community, which many rely on for post-secondary tuition.”

The OAASC is calling on the government to halt school closures and commission a study on the effects of school closures on rural children and communities.

OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas will be one of several speakers at Monday’s rally.
