The biomedical technologists at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton have voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining OPSEU/SEFPO.
“Congratulations and welcome – we’re always incredibly proud when a new group of heroic front-line medical professionals decides to join our great union,” said OPSEU/SEFPO President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “As this pandemic drags on, the work these members do is vital to so many in Hamilton and beyond. By joining together with us, they’ll be able to do their work even better.”
The new members join more than 800 other OPSEU/SEFPO members at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and more than 25,000 other health professionals working in 84 hospitals across the province.
They decided to join OPSEU/SEFPO because they were growing tired of being saddled with more and more work that their managers used to do.
“I’m from the Hamilton area. Workers there know that signing a union card and then voting to join a union are the best ways to get their voices heard,” said OPSEU/SEFPO First Vice-President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida. “Just because we’re in an ongoing health crisis doesn’t mean managers can get away with downloading a bunch of extra work onto these health professionals.
“With 180,000 OPSEU/SEFPO members at their side, these new members at St. Joe’s will have the strength and solidarity to hold their ground.”
