Toronto – After a protracted period of negotiations, members of Units 1 and 2 of OPSEU Local 578 have ratified changes to their respective collective agreements with York University’s English Language Institute (YUELI), a part of the School of Continuing Studies.

Unit 1’s settlement includes a 1.5 per cent wage increase in each year of the three-year contract, while providing for increased autonomy for instructors.

Unit 2’s settlement also includes a 1.5 per cent wage increase in each year of the three-year contract, along with increased job security and, for the first time, sick days for instructors.

Staff Representative Bernard King said he was pleased that a settlement had finally been reached. “Our Instructors receive consistently high reviews from students. Now York has recognized their expertise, experience and contributions. The ratified agreements advance members’ issues and set the stage for further improvements in the future.”

Warren (Smokey) Thomas, President of OPSEU, was encouraged by news of the settlement. “The teaching staff at YUELI always go the extra mile. They’re motivated and dedicated, and they give so much to their students and the university. It’s great to see the parties come to an agreement.”

OPSEU Unit 1 represents permanent instructors at YUELI, while Unit 2 represents all non‑permanent instructors at the institute.
