Durhamregion.com tells the story of Pickering resident, Albert Salmon, who received an Individual Humanitarian Award at OPSEU Convention for his fight against racism in the workplace.
Salmon said, “It was a really special moment in my life,” and that he was really shocked when he got the message from the union, since he had retired, and he knew there were so many other union workers across Ontario.
He said it was important for him to stand up against workplace abuse and racism because, “When you look at a lot of stuff, all across the world, not a lot of people have a voice to stand up for themselves, and I thought, ‘I need to stand up.'”
Salmon says he hopes his story will stop similar situations from happening in the workplace.
