Death of inmate Sunday at EMDC is 14th since 2009

After more than a year without a fatality at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC), a male inmate died about 4 p.m. Sunday, London police said Monday.

“When the Tories were in opposition, they were on their feet in the legislature calling out the Liberals for shirking their responsibility to keep correctional officers and inmates and our communities safe,” Smokey Thomas, head of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, said Thursday.

He called for the government’s first budget April 11 to include money to hire and train more correctional officers, build new jails and retrofit old ones.
