The OPSEU Disability Rights Caucus (DRC) has encountered several issues with the Ontario Government’s COVID-19 response and how it affects workers.
The DRC has been given specific examples of workers exposed to COVID-19 who are being denied their rights to compensation. We are requesting your help in gathering data on how these issues are affecting our members.
Some examples we’ve encountered include:
1. Workers who are infected with COVID-19 in their workplace and are denied WSIB.
2. Workers required to self-isolate for 14 days who exhaust their allotment of sick days can’t get further sick time for a reoccurrence or to look after a dependent who is sent home to self-isolate or is sick with COVID-19.
3. Workers exposed by a loved one to COVID-19 while working from home and are denied WSIB benefits unless they can establish that they were exposed to the virus during ‘normal’ working hours.
We would love to hear from you in order to gather data that will help us lobby the government to fill these gaps in our workplaces. No worker infected with COVID-19 or required to isolate through no fault of their own should be financially punished. We want to hear your voices so please take a moment to fill out the survey monkey by October 16th, 2020.
