Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) secretary-treasurer Patty Coates was elected president on Tuesday at the OFL’s Convention.

We would like to personally congratulate Patty on being elected to the top post. She is dedicated and passionate on fighting for workers’ rights.  We know she will serve us well in her new position.

OPSEU members should be proud of taking part in the democratic process that elected the first female president in the organization’s history.

Congratulations are also in order for the OFL’s new secretary-treasurer, Ahmad Gaied, and the new executive vice-president, Janice Folk-Dawson. Both he and Janice are tireless fighters for workers’ rights. We wish them all the best in their new roles.

It’s been a great week at the OFL Convention 2019. As they do every two years, the folks here are doing a terrific job of bringing together unions from across the province to discuss items of great importance.

On Sunday, it was very encouraging to see so many OPSEU members at our plenary session. We put forth a number of resolutions to address things like under-funding and understaffing of our corrections system; addressing uncertain contracts for college academic faculty; and, of course, our absolute demand that the government abandon its wage cap legislation – to just name a few.

OPSEU looks forward to a busy 2020 working on behalf of our members and working with our labour allies.
