OPSEU activists will receive multiple awards at the 2018 Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts gala celebration on April 7, 2018.
Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU President, extends his congratulations to all of the OPSEU awards winners for their creativity and use of the arts to promote labour rights. “College faculty made such great use of video, music, signs and theatre during their bargaining and strike action. And Yeti’s creative costume and character was a staple of the picket lines. D’Arcy Martin has been a huge promoter of labour arts throughout his career. Congratulations to all of these stand-out current and former OPSEU activists.”
OPSEU College Faculty members are the winners of the Labour Organization Awards for Excellence in Contribution to Labour Arts for a labour organization which has made outstanding use of the arts to engage their membership.
“Yeti on Strike”, widely rumoured to be an OPSEU part-time college faculty member, is the winner of this year’s Labour Creative Maverick Award for an unusual and creative use of the arts to promote labour rights and awareness.
Former President of OPSEU Local 578, D’Arcy Martin, is the winner of the 2018 Labour Activist Award for Excellence in Contribution to Labour Arts for a labour activist who has made outstanding use of the arts to promote the values of the labour and social justice movements.
