The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), of which OPSEU is a component, is conducting research into what generational change means for unions and the labour movement in Canada.

The research will begin with a short survey of members of NUPGE components. The purpose will be to help recruit participants for an upcoming online study. The survey will take under 10 minutes to complete. Member perceptions and feelings through the lens of generational differences are some of the information that will be analyzed. A subset of respondents will then be recruited to participate in the online community study made up of millennial (age 18 to 35) members.

Members' views will be reported with complete anonymity, and questions will explore a number of themes:

  • Perceptions of union trust
  • Perceptions of union value
  • Perceptions of youth in the workplace and within the union

Members' views will be extremely valuable in mapping out what can be expected during the next worker-cohort transition and will provide advice for communicating with and engaging young members. This survey is open to members of all ages, and all are encouraged to take part.

As an added incentive, ALL participants who complete the survey will have their names entered into a draw for a new iPad!

OPSEU's Provincial Young Workers Committee (PYC) will be working to connect with certain hard-to-reach groups within the membership to maximize participation and reach these recruitment goals. The PYC will be focusing its efforts on:

  • Recruiting young members (under 35)
  • Members who are less active or less vocal within the union culture

Those chosen from the survey to participate in the online community will receive a $100 incentive. Participation in this online community will take about an hour.
