The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), of which OPSEU is a component, is doing work to help address generational differences in the workplace and in the union.  It is building on the work done from the Millennial Project, the results of which were generated in the document Communicating With Young Members

The Exploring Generational Cohesion in Our Unions project will explore similarities and differences between generations, but will look specifically at how the generational divide affects women in unions.  This will all be used to develop a communication strategy to help NUPGE’s components frame issues in a way that builds member unity and defends against potential internal divisions both within the workplace and the union.

The first phase of this project is an online survey consisting of 18 questions.  The survey is open to all OPSEU members.  In order to draw meaningful conclusions from the data, a mix of young and more experienced workers as well as good representation across genders and races are encouraged to take part.

The survey takes approximately 11 minutes to complete and participants can choose to opt-in to a draw for a chance to win an iPad!  All information is kept confidential and will be separated from the survey responses.

Participants will also be asked whether or not they would like to opt-in for Phase II of the project.  It will be an anonymous and confidential online group consultation with fellow members across the country where they can share their thoughts on union issues in greater detail.  NUPGE will not be in direct contact with any of the participants as all consultation with the focus groups will be conducted by a third party.  Time commitment for the online community is flexible and at the participant’s convenience.  Joining this community will give participants a second opportunity to enter a bonus draw for another iPad.

The findings from this project will be presented at NUPGE’s Women’s Conference in February 2019.
