OPSEU/SEFPO’s Coalition of Racialized Workers (CoRW) will be convening their Election Summit on Friday March 22 to Sunday March 24, 2024, at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel in Downtown Toronto.

Quite fittingly the theme is, “The Right of Self-Selection in a Democratic Environment,” which speaks to the trials, tribulations and victories of the past, the resistance of today and the path forward for the work ahead. Using an anti-racist and intersectional lens, participants will come together and mobilize by understanding the importance of this election for Black and racialized workers.

Delegates at the 2022 OPSEU/SEFPO Convention voted to amend the union’s Constitution which changed CoRW’s status to a provincial equity committee under Article 19. This was a significant milestone in the union’s history because members of CoRW can make an even greater impact to support and engage with OPSEU/SEFPO’s Black and racialized members.

The main purpose of this Election Summit is to mobilize Black and racialized members and to elect representatives to the Coalition of Racialized Workers (CoRW) Committee. This Summit will also explore and discuss critical strategies that will advance OPSEU/SEFPO’s priorities on dismantling anti-Black racism through sustainable and meaningful change.

It also builds upon other key achievements for OPSEU/SEFPO which include the addition of seven equity-designated seats on the Executive Board as well as the ongoing mandatory training on dismantling anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and all forms of systemic racism for all elected union officials.

Election Summit Format:

The Election Summit will be an in-person event with no option to attend virtually.

There will be a total of fourteen (14) elected positions all of which are representative of OPSEU/SEFPO’s seven (7) regions.

Below is the breakdown of elected CoRW positions:

  • Region 1 – Two (2) positions
  • Region 2 – Two (2) positions
  • Region 3 – Two (2) positions
  • Region 4 – Two (2) positions
  • Region 5 – Four (4) positions
  • Region 6 – One (1) position
  • Region 7 – One (1) position

Note: Black and/or Racialized OPSEU/SEFPO members who will not stand for elected positions are also eligible to attend the Election Summit and vote for CoRW candidates from their region.

OPSEU/SEFPO Child Care Policy

OPSEU/SEFPO undertakes to provide childcare services, when requested, at all union educationals, conventions, regional, divisional, and demand-setting meetings where the membership requests at least three weeks prior to the event. Members who bring their children to OPSEU/SEFPO sponsored functions should normally be required to use the on-site childcare service if it is available. The three-week notice will ensure adequate time to process advances when requested. If no requests for on-site childcare are received three weeks prior to the activity date, childcare arrangements for on-site childcare may not be made. If members then bring children to the event without the required notice, the member should be responsible for making his/her own childcare arrangements.
