The Coalition of Racialized Workers (formerly the Workers of Colour Caucus) will be holding its first racialized workers conference on March 1-3, 2019 at the Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto.
The Racialized Workers Conference proposes to advance the Union agenda by identifying key issues confronting racialized workers and finding meaningful ways to address the issues by bringing together labour activists and community members from across the province. In so doing, the Coalition aims to develop the leadership capacities and equity skills of racialized workers; create culturally appropriate networks; develop union strategies for human rights and equity; encourage and engage new member activism; and strengthen anti-racist advocacy and organizing.
The specific goal of the Conference would be to flip the script by seeking a deeper understanding about how racialization manifests in North America and how it impacts workers in obvious and invisible ways. Raising awareness about how racialized workers can engage in activism that speaks truth to power but also not forgetting about self-care and development.
Some of the topics to be discussed at the conference include:
- Critical “race” analysis
- Anti-black racism: racial profiling and carding
- Confronting islamophobia
- Resistance, Accountability, Data
- Leading the anti-racist change in the workplace and union
- Forging links with diverse racialized Communities outside our union
