Act today to save the LCBO

The Ford government is pushing a privatization agenda that threatens the long-term survival of the LCBO.

Finance Minister Vic Fedeli confirmed last week that the expansion of beer and wine sales into convenience stores, big-box stores and more grocery stores will be part of his upcoming budget on April 11.

Ontario needs the LCBO. The profits from LCBO sales, $2.21 billion in 2017-18, help pay for health care, education and other important public services. The LCBO is a socially responsible retailer that ensures the safety of our communities. LCBO staff challenged 13.9 million transactions last year over concerns of intoxication, underage purchase or second-party purchase.

A Nanos poll for OPSEU shows that Ontarians are 12 times more likely to choose the LCBO over private stores to keep beer and wine out of the hands of kids.

The people of Ontario built the LCBO, paid for the LCBO and own the LCBO. The government says it has no plans to sell off the LCBO. Our union will hold them to this promise. We won’t let the government destroy this valuable asset.

We need your help. It’s time for Doug Ford to hear from every single OPSEU member.
