College Faculty bargaining continues as Support Staff colleagues reach a tentative agreement
While faculty bargaining continues, our support staff colleagues announced last Friday a tentative settlement that will be presented for a ratification vote soon. We congratulate the Support Staff Bargaining Team on this achievement.
As the details of their deal are released in the coming days, it is important to remember that CAAT Support bargain independently from CAAT Academic (faculty). Support and faculty issues are significantly different; direct comparisons between the two groups cannot be made given the very different member priorities and bargaining contexts.
Faculty bargaining enters the critical phase
The contract for Ontario college faculty expires August 31, 2014. Since the start of our bargaining on June 2, some low priority issues have been addressed. The top priorities in this round have been presented by your team, but management has yet to recognize the serious need for improvements for both partial-load and full-time faculty members in job security, workload and academic authority in the classroom. At this point, management is taking the position that these aren’t issues that need to be dealt with and things are working well. You have told us strongly this isn’t so.
To move our issues forward, we have applied for the services of a conciliator: Peter Simpson, the Director of Dispute Resolution Services in the Ministry of Labour, has been appointed and will join us August 19. He has extensive experience working in the post-secondary sector. Some may recognize Peter from his role as assistant executive director of CAUT (Canadian Association of University Teachers).
Regular updates will be available on Facebook and Twitter. Watch your personal non-college email for more detailed messages from your bargaining team and your Local.
