As many as 10,000 activists from across Canada are expected for the Peoples’ Social Forum in Ottawa from August 21 to 24. Inspired by the Occupy movement, Quebec students’ movement and Idle No More, the Peoples’ Social Forum will include more than 500 workshops and presentations, art and music events, keynote speakers, rallies, assemblies and lectures. A massive rally on Thursday afternoon will march to Parliament Hill.
The four days will be jam packed with opportunities to meet activists, share ideas and build Canada’s social movements in anticipation of the upcoming Federal election. Sessions are divided into 17 themes including many that are of particular interest to the labour movement such as work, public services, the economy, movements, migration and communications. These will form the basis of movement assemblies which will serve to carry forward with actions after the forum is over.
Don’t miss the session by OPSEU activists Edie Strachan and Morgen Veres together with International lesbian gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Association presentation “Through the Courts, into the streets & Back to the Bargaining Table: An overview of LGBT rights in Canada and how they were gained by unions.”
