The World Health Organization’s decision to make 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife is a good reflection of the times we live in where nurses are recognized as an essential part of the health care system.
Quality health care starts with nurses. We know firsthand how compassion, selflessness, professionalism, and wisdom bring patients through their most vulnerable periods in life. It is only right they be recognized like this for the work they do. We’re thrilled that the world will spend the entire year honouring them.
OPSEU is a union where health care professionals make up a large portion of the collective – our RPN members are over 4,000 strong in community health care, mental health, hospital support, long-term care, the Ontario Public Service, corrections, and developmental services roles. We also have registered nurses (RNs) who are valuable members throughout our sectors. We as OPSEU’s leadership pride ourselves on being the voice that advocates on their behalf for things such as systemic underfunding, privatization, increased workloads, inappropriate staffing to patient ratios, and health and safety to name just a few.
To all the midwives, RPNs, psychiatric nurses, and RNs in Ontario, we say thank you for your dedication, excellence, and passion. We urge everyone to join the official Year of the Nurse and Midwife campaign and show support for these health care workers. Also be sure to check out and share our new video!
