After months of eager anticipation, President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and First Vice-President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida were joined by OPSEU members and staff to mark May Day by celebrating the Grand Opening of OPSEU’s newly renovated head office this week.
The new space will significantly improve functionality – with more meeting space, a large training room and 24-hour member access – while respecting the building’s architectural beauty.
“It’s been a long time coming, but seeing the final product makes it all worthwhile,” said Almeida. “We started this project because we know that investing in our members makes our union stronger. We want this place to be a resource for our members; a place to meet, plan and to learn for years to come.”
Thomas and Almeida also took the opportunity to announce big news for the union: OPSEU has purchased a new building at 155 Lesmill Rd., for use as office space and as an expanded Membership Training Centre.
“This investment just makes sense,” said Thomas. “Our union is growing and our buildings need to reflect our members’ growing needs. When we bring more services and member resources in-house, we’re investing in the future of our union, and the many generations of OPSEU members to come.”
“It’s all the more meaningful that we can celebrate how vibrant our union is on this day that recognizes workers and their struggles to gain the rights we all enjoy and deserve.”
