I’m writing to you to share my thoughts with you regarding the Ontario Tree Seed Plant in Angus, Ontario. I appreciate that you are reviewing the closure decision and giving the public and other stakeholders an opportunity to give you our input.
I support keeping the Ontario Tree Seed Plant open and run publicly by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for the following reasons:
- The Ontario Tree Seed Plant is the only one of its kind in the province, and they have been supplying tree planting programs, nurseries, forestry companies and individuals with seeds for over 90 years.
- The employees of the Ontario Tree Seed Plant are highly-trained experts at extracting, cleaning, testing, storing and distributing tree seeds. Their wealth of experience is irreplaceable.
- I agree with the many environmental groups, nurseries and forestry industry stakeholders who say that the private sector does not have the capacity to take over the work of the Tree Seed Plant, and that the government needs to continue providing this essential service to keep Ontario’s forests healthy and resilient.
Our forests depend on the Ontario Tree Seed Plant. Closing it and privatizing the commercial services it provides would be inefficient, bad for the environment, and bad for business.
Please keep the Ontario Tree Seed Plant open, and keep it public.
