Rainbow Alliance arc-en-ciel
OPSEU’s Rainbow Alliance arc-en-ciel provides representation and support to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersex, asexual, queer, questioning, two-spirited (LGBTTIAQQ2S) members. We promote equality and a harassment-free work environment. Tackling discrimination in the workplace means addressing and tackling discrimination in our communities, unions and homes.
What we do
- Promote LGBTTIAQQ2S involvement and leadership in the union
- Advocate and educate around our members’ issues within the union
- Create a safe space to share our experiences, knowledge and expertise
- Promote OPSEU’s name in our communities through Pride and Solidarity Work

Safe Schools - OPSEU members know that making schools a safe and inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersex, asexual, queer, questioning and two-spirited individuals, for children of LGBTTIAQQ2S people, and for LGBTTIAQQ2S teachers and school staff is important. Members must lobby schools to adopt proactive and comprehensive discrimination and harassment policies. School and their Boards must also ensure the presence of an inclusive curriculum and positive role models.
Eldercare – Given the emphasis that is often placed on youth within the gay Community, this can translate into a failure to recognize the existence of older gay men, lesbian and bisexual persons and their partners. This gap in human rights analysis and delivery has serious implications for the elder LGBTTIAQQ2S experience in social areas such as services, health care and institutions. The Commission has recommended that health care and social service providers receive training to enable them to appropriately address the needs of older gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersexed, queer, questioning, two-spirited persons. They also suggest that residential facilities ensure that LGBTTIAQQ2S residents are protected from homophobia, and afforded the same rights and recognition of their relationships as other residents. Events: Bill C-279 looks to preserve the rights of all transgender Canadians
OPSEU’s Rainbow Alliance is pleased to announce that on March 20, 2013, the House of Commons passed 3rd reading of Bill C-279. This private member’s bill aims to include gender identity as a prohibited ground of discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. If it becomes law, it would become illegal to discriminate against transgender Canadians.
The bill passed by a vote of 149-137 with members of the Opposition parties, those who were present, voting unanimously in support of the bill. The final count also included the support of 18 Conservative Party MPs. Prime Minister Stephen Harper voted against the bill.
Sponsored by NDP MP Randall Garrison, Bill C-279 also looks to amend the Criminal Code of Canada. Hate speech that advocates genocide against groups distinguished by gender would be outlawed. The bill’s proposed amendments would also permit the use of evidence in a case where hate based crimes are committed on the basis of gender. This evidence would be taken into account during sentencing.
Bill C-279 will now proceed to the Senate to follow a similar process of readings and debates.
