Job Requirements

Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent Certification of Medical laboratory Assistant (OSMT) or equivalent
Experience with planting Microbiology specimens, separating and labelling serum Effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft applications
Ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with other staff Knowledge of the public health laboratory information system including billing Knowledgeable in safety practices when handling biological specimens
Demonstrated ability to communicate and read using English in order to effectively perform the requirements of this position
Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history

Job Description

This is a temporary full-time opportunity for approximately 12 months.

As an integral member of the Microbiology leadership team and under the direction of the Director or delegate, the Senior Technologist in Virology/ Molecular section will be responsible for the development/introduction, evaluation, validation, and implementation of new tests under guidance; train staff, coordinate daily workload, provides technical guidance and supervision to assigned staff. Acts as a technical specialist and a resource in the assigned discipline. Responsible for efficient uses of resources and ensures smooth operation of the section.

Principal Responsibilities:

Act as a Technical Specialist:

Maintains an updated, accurate Standard Operating Procedure and ensures regulatory compliance. Provides technical, procedural and theoretical guidance to staff,
Provides direction and coaches staff in day-to-day activities, ensuring work is complete, accurate and reported within the expected timeframe. Ensures relevant agencies are notified of critical results.
Ensures the assigned areas run efficiently and effectively.
Monitors workflow, staff coverage and ensures equitable distribution of workload. Reviews patient and proficiency results
Ensures adequate supplies are available to complete the necessary workload.
Ensures the Virology/Molecular section meets and maintains the required standards of accreditation

Performs molecular diagnostic and serology testing bench work and participates in shift work as required:

Performs routine molecular diagnostic and serology testing.

Problem Solving and Decision Making:
Develops and maintains strong problem solving skills as applied to procedures and instrumentation Pursues and promotes the use of innovative technologies.
Overcomes resistance/obstacles in working toward resolutions or results.
Identifies and investigates problems, determines root causes, develops and implements strategies for improvement/solving problems both internally and externally.
Participates in staff, operational, QA and relevant meetings to enhance communications and to report on significant issues.

Job Requirements

Graduate of accredited Medical Laboratory Technology Program and must possess active and current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in Microbiology
Advanced Registered Technologists (ART), Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Scientists (CSMLS) or Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLSc) or equivalent
Five years recent experience in Molecular Microbiology and Serology.
1 year supervisory experience in a medical lab environment in the last 3 years preferred. Demonstrated expert technical skills in microbiology and/or molecular biology.
Proven troubleshooting, maintenance and repair skills in instruments used in the area. Demonstrated excellence in method development, problem solving and project management skills. Advanced knowledge and experience in method validation and regulatory requirements.
Ability to interpret and apply new information from scientific literature relevant to molecular diagnostics, serology and virology.
In-depth knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance.
Demonstrated knowledge of quality management, inventory management and continuous quality improvement. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) and other regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated teaching and coaching skills.
Proven ability to work independently; exercises initiatives for continuous improvement. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks. Able to work under pressure. Proven excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Strong team building skills, ability to motivate staff, and embrace change.
Able and willing to take on more responsibilities including those of the Charge Technologist, especially in his absence. Competent in using computer systems, i.e., LIS and MS Office software.
