Fraud Stopper Day a success

Wearing stickers that identified them as fraud stoppers, ServiceOntario staff held lunch-time events in front of their workplaces in Toronto, Oshawa and Thunder Bay today.

Thank you to Locals 340, 502, 528, 555 and 736 for organizing and promoting these information events. Thank you to all who participated and showed their support including Executive Board Members and staff of NDP MPPs.

Our members handed out information cards to the public alerting them to the threat of identity theft and fraud if the Ontario government is allowed to sell off ServiceOntario. The public was urged to e-mail their MPPs immediately to stop the privatization.

The legislation to privatize ServiceOntario is included in Bill 55, the implementation bill for the government’s budget.

President Warren (Smokey) Thomas told MPPs at budget hearings last week that the government must scrap the legislation. He warned of risks to Ontarians’ personal information should the privatization go through. Three hours after his submission, the government had to shut down the privately-operated kiosks because of a security breach.
