This standing annual scholarship of $1000 was created in 2020 in honor of Karen Millar, Local 448. Karen was a valued and respected Residential Counsellor at a Kemptville group home operated by Pathways to Independence, and was the victim of a homicide in her workplace.
Who can apply?
This scholarship is open to dependents of any OPSEU/SEFPO member in good standing. The applicant must be currently enrolled in a Social Services program at a Canadian college or university.
How to apply
All of the following items must be submitted with your completed application and received by OPSEU/SEFPO, by email or mail on or before the application deadline of July 30, 2021 (see application form for mailing and email addresses):
- The application form, completed fully. Once the fillable application is opened, click on “view” and then select “edit document” to fill out and return by the application deadline.
- A personal statement about why you have chosen to pursue studies in social services, and what your future goals are as a result of your studies.
- Respond to the following question. Your response may be a 1,500 word essay, or a photo series, short video, poem, audio file, or visual art piece:
What is a health and safety obstacle that you have witnessed in a workplace or educational setting? How was it addressed and/or overcome? And how could such obstacles be prevented in the future?
