The grim stories filling our newspapers and TV screens are sparking an overwhelming response from Canadians who want to help in any way possible. We know that working people and unions want to be sure that that their contributions to Haiti go to those organizations that will make best use of the donations to help those most at need. The Canadian Labour Congress has set up a direct donation link on their website http://www.canadianlabour.ca. The Canada Haiti Action Network has compiled a list of recommendations for donations to Haiti. Check http://www.canadahaitiaction.ca and they also have extensive coverage of the political crisis in Haiti.
For an insightful analysis of the roots of Haiti’s economic disaster, read Peter Hallward’s article in the UK Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/jan/13/our-role-in-haitis-plight.
