OPSEU College Support Staff workers are once again offering the “OPSEU College Support Staff Marilou Martin Scholarship.” This scholarship is offered to full-time students enrolled at any of the  24 Colleges of Applied Arts & Technology (CAAT) in Ontario.  Support Staff local unions across the province fundraise to offer these scholarships to the students we proudly work with.

This year, we are pleased to offer an additional semester with eight (8) x $1,500 scholarships.

Scholarship Theme

Union Impact on Gender Equity

Unions promote both social change and increased awareness of equity within the workplace. Unions undertake collective bargaining to positively impact workplace conditions, and to promote social change.

To achieve equity, it is not enough for workplace policies and procedures to be “gender neutral.” The employer must consider their impact on all genders. For example, failure to provide adequate childcare can be applied equally to all employees regardless of gender but this will negatively impact female workers more than male workers. To be equitable, policies and procedures must account for this disparate impact.

Application Submission Criteria

Both of the following two questions must clearly be addressed in your submission.

  1. How has collective bargaining impacted gender equity in the workforce? Please provide examples and evidence to support your position.
  2. What can unions do in the future to make workplaces more inclusive and equal for all genders?

Applications can be submitted in any of the following forms:

  • Poem
  • Song
  • 500-word written essay (with references/bibliography)
  • Video (2 minutes in length)
  • Visual Art
