Dear staff at LifeLabs:

At OPSEU, we understand that unionization can be a difficult process – often accompanied by anxiety and conflicting emotions. We also know that you don’t take this decision lightly. Three years ago, you turned down unionization and gave management an opportunity to live up to their promises and commitments. To date, their track record is one of broken promises, benefit cuts, and an arbitrary bonus system that fails to recognize the hard work of frontline lab staff. LifeLabs has admitted its neglect, profusely apologizing in various memos, one-on-one conversations, huddles, and meetings.

For those of you who are just starting your careers at LifeLabs, you may not have known that three years ago, LifeLabs said you did not need a union. At that time, staff met with upper management in person and gave multiple reasons why staff were better off without one. Today, are you hearing the same recycled message from Sue Paish and Chris Hudson?

We believe that having a legal voice will create a healthier work environment where fear no longer dominates and your collective voice is heard and respected. LifeLabs is successful because its staff are the heart of the organization. Without you, LifeLabs’ record-breaking profits and stellar reputation in the community would not exist.

We want to thank each and every one of you who had the courage to sign a union card and helped us come this far in the process. We want to thank you for your passion and devotion to LifeLabs and for all the great work you do for the community who relies on your dedication and professionalism.
