Significant strides have been made in HIV prevention and treatment, but in a world marked by intersecting inequalities, not everyone is experiencing the benefits of these advancements. In sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS persists as a leading cause of death, and women, girls, and LGBTIQ communities bear a disproportionate burden due to the inequities they face.
For over 20 years, the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) has provided responsive and flexible support to organizations across sub-Saharan Africa led by and for the communities most affected by the HIV epidemic. With support from the SLF, these grassroots organizations are providing holistic support to advance health and human rights in their communities, including healthcare, education, counselling, legal assistance, and leadership training. They offer income-generating opportunities to people facing discrimination and exclusion in traditional labour sectors. They also help community members collectively organize to claim their human rights at local, national, and international levels.
OPSEU/SEFPO has supported the SLF since 2009 to advance their mission. Through our partnership, we are helping grassroots organizations in sub-Saharan Africa challenge colonial systems and combat discrimination and injustice on multiple fronts. Their impact extends globally and warrants solidarity from around the world.
