Background
Parkdale residents rely on Parkdale Community Legal Services to provide free legal services when facing critical problems with immigration, housing, social assistance or employment. They have been located at 1266 Queen Street West since 2000.
The current landlord is carrying out renovations in the building. PCLS and the landlord have an agreement that PCLS will continue to operate out of the building during construction, and that they would be compensated for any temporary relocation that may be required.
However, once construction began in October, the landlord gave PCLS notice that their lease is terminated as of January 1, 2019. PCLS is attempting to negotiate a reasonable amount of time to leave the premises and find a new location during construction.
PCLS has worked with the community at this location for 18 years. They currently have an agreement with their landlord to be compensated for any time they cannot operate at the office due to construction, and to return to the space after construction at a set rate. Since this agreement is no longer being upheld, PCLS at the very least needs a reasonable amount of time, at least a few additional months, to relocate.
