While Pride continues to be a celebration of freedom to be oneself in the public realm, it is equally a remembrance of our Queer and transgender elders and the generations of courageous sacrifice and activism they undertook to bring our community to where it is today.
In 1969, the iconic Stonewall Inn saw the emergence of Pride through a series of successful yet sacrificial riots in protest of malicious and violent human rights violations perpetuated relentlessly against their communities by the New York City government and police, who for years ignored the hardship and abuse faced by the Queer and trans communities of New York.
To this day, we are still fighting many battles across Ontario and Canada to protect the progress we’ve achieved, and to combat rising levels of hate against our transgender siblings. Unions across Canada have long joined with Queer and trans activists in organizing and protesting harmful government policies and legislation.
Who better to lend their support and resources towards the ongoing fights for 2SLGBTQIA+ liberation than OPSEU/SEFPO?
We ask you to join the Rainbow Alliance arc-en-ciel (RAA) in bringing our passion for our union to Capital Pride in 2024 in solidarity with our Queer and trans siblings!
