The union’s most important work happens at the local level. It’s here that the local union, presidents, vice-presidents, stewards and others do the heavy lifting to protect and enhance our members’ interests.
Local union representatives are the face and the voice of OPSEU. How you interact with members and what you do on their behalf is critically important for their impression of the union, its purpose and its effectiveness.
That’s why we’re offering this valuable course. We want to make sure you have everything you need to be the best local presidents you can be. Over three days, you’ll get the skills, tools and knowledge you need to carry out your important responsibilities. You’ll also become more familiar with OPSEU’s organizational structure and systems, as well as the supports and resources that are available to you.
You’ll learn strategies to build an involved membership, always a big challenge, through steward development and contract enforcement, while focusing on health and safety and equity as everyday local issues.
You’ll also learn how to mobilize your local by acquiring effective communication and inclusive leadership skills, exploring local bylaws and developing strategic approaches to deal with employer tactics.
The informal group setting of this workshop will allow you to interact with other local presidents to use and hone the practical leadership skills you’ve acquired.
To maximize the number of participants, we’ve made two sessions available for you to choose from. Both sessions will be held at the OPSEU Head Office, 100 Lesmill Road, Toronto, M3B 3P8.
