The OPSEU Live and Let Live Fund invites you to a Meet and Greet with Pepe Julian Onziema
Pepe Julian Onziema is the Program Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), an Advocacy network based in Kampala that works to defend and advocate for the protection of human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons across Uganda. He is a fearless influencer of human rights who has been working to strengthen the rights of sexual and gender minorities over the past ten years. He has been arbitrarily arrested, physically assaulted on Kampala streets, faced death threats but continues to live openly as a Transman in Uganda. He is the SOGIE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression) focal person on the Steering Committee of the Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network, advocates for LGBTI inclusion and protection at the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
In 2012, he was awarded the Clinton Global Citizen Award for Leadership in Civil Society for his pioneering work advocating for LGBTI, and also received Stonewall- Hero of the Year Award in 2014. He is a 2015 NED Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow, and Fellow of the inaugural Africans Rising Activists in Residence Program 2017.
