The movement for decent jobs is growing. April 15 has been designated as a global day of action, and in cities and towns across Ontario OPSEU will join dozens of other groups in demanding a $15 an hour minimum wage, decent hours, paid sick days, the right to join and keep a union, and workplace rules that protect all of us.
The movement began in the US in 2014 with fast food and retail workers walking off the job in support of their demand for a minimum wage of $15 an hour. Momentum built the next year as 14 American cities and counties in seven states agreed to increase the minimum wage to $15.
In Ontario, the government is currently conducting a review of labour and employment laws for the first time in a generation. Now is the time for working people to put pressure on Queen’s Park to come through with real change to the minimum wage and greater protections for precarious workers.
