From their various work locations, corrections members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) will take part in a wide variety of community-specific charity fundraising events as part of the second annual “Corrections Cares about Communities” event.
Chris Jackel, chair of the Corrections Ministry-Employee Relations Committee, said last year’s success had encouraged members to make Corrections Cares an annual event. “We were enthused by the warm welcome we received from the communities we serve. Working under the violent and volatile conditions we do, it’s heartwarming to see that our communities care as much about us and our work as we do about them.”
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas applauded the correctional workers’ community outreach. “Every, single day, correctional officers have to deal with difficult, dangerous, and deplorable working conditions but never lose sight of reaching out a helping hand to those most in need. I am proud to lead our union and represent these extraordinary members. They are shining example of what it means to give back to the communities they keep safe.”
